Charlotte leaders gathered Friday to celebrate Arbor Day by planting two Willow Oaks trees.
The trees will honor Pat Garrett’s retirement from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Housing Partnership, after 23 years as president. Charlotte is nicknamed “The City of Trees” because of its large tree canopy. And organizations are working to keep that title.
“We strive really hard in Charlotte to protect what we have and also reforest areas we can. Our goal is to have a fifty percent tree canopy by 2050. Through preservation of existing canopy and replanting efforts that are ongoing, we anticipate hitting that,” said Charlotte Tree Advisory Commission Chairman Matt McLaren.
Arbor Day is celebrated at different times in each state. North Carolina marks it the first Friday after March 15.
