With great weather and desire for healthy living and delicious food, there are over 100 community gardens in Charlotte with more emerging everyday. Friendship Gardens, Sow Much Good and the Field to Fork Program are three organizations leading this charge: The Field to Fork Program is a partnership between Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, Mecklenburg Country Health Department, Charlotte Green, and Fuel Pizza where elementary students learn about gardening, nutrition, and healthy cooking by growing vegetables that they cook on homemade vegetable pizzas.
Sow Much Good brings access, awareness, education and tools for local sustainable food sources to low income, underserved populations to create healthier people and communities. Through a network of gardens across Mecklenburg County, Friendship Gardens Charlotte creates community around local food traditions, growing healthy food, making it available to all — especially those with limited access — and sharing knowledge and passion for sustainable food production. The weather right now is prime for planting lettuces, radishes, carrots and other root veggies.
